What is A Room With A View about, in your opinion? What methods doesE.M. Forster occasion to convey this message to the referee?A Room With A View is about the social change occurring in England inthe early 20th century, get off Queen Victorias death. Darwin had justpublished his book on the theory of evolution which was the catalystfor the introduction of more liberal and secular ideas into aconservative and spectral England. In order to explain this processof change, Forster likens it to the Renaissance, which is why it issignificant that A Room With A View begins in Italy. The problem witha rapidly changing society is that members of that society do notnecessarily know how to behave because the boundaries are changing andthis is what Forster is trying to portray in A Room With A View.Every character in the novel can be categorised into one of twogroups, the Victorian/Medieval characters and the 20thCentury/Renaissance characters. real characters symbolise differentperiods. H owever, Forster is skilful enough to make these charactersrealistic which is why they are capable of contradiction for quite afew characters, the reader believes that they last to one of thesegroups but then their behaviour is suddenly contrary to that groupthus confusing the reader as to what period they symbolise.For example Miss bartlett is immediately perceived by the reader as aVictorian because in the first chapter she refuses Mr Emersonsgenerosity because she feels it would be improper to accept. Howeverat the end of the novel, the reader is made aware that Miss Bartlettpurposefully does not interrupt a conversation between Lucy and MrEmerson, perfectly aware that he could persuade Lucy to admi... ...es, where hoi polloi believed in love, but despisethose defied convention to marry for love.His novel is successful at doing this because it glorifies passion andimpulsiveness he mocks those symbolising convention such as Cecil, Mr yearning and Miss Bartlett and endorses thos e that represent love andliberalisation. Cecil doesnt just represent convention he alsorepresents culture. Lucy and George marry in the end to everyonessurprise because it is Forsters hope to boost romance. AlthoughForsters novel is dealing with specific events occurring in Englishhistory it never the less remains a novel which is still enjoyed todaybecause it deals with the universal group that love conquers all. Thecharacters are creations that live today just as they did as when thenovel was first published, because they are so realistic and familiarto the reader.
